Artist Statement
I have two bodies of work– impressionist watercolor paintings, and whimsically surreal pen and ink drawings.
Whether I am painting the great outdoors or cities and buildings, my watercolor landscapes are about light and shadow. When I look about the world for something to paint, I’m really looking for patterns light. I find these patterns beautiful in and of themselves, but I also love how shadow patterns can illuminate time of day and year. For me, watercolor with its vivid translucent colors, is the perfect medium for playing with shadows.
My watercolor style is impressionistic. I paint in translucent layers, which break my designs up into simple shapes. The effect is much like batik, or woodblock prints.
My pen and ink drawings (and digitally manipulated drawings) begin with a pun or a visual idea about transformation. The drawings are illustrations of those ideas. My aim is to make the viewer smile
