About the Artist

Needing Art for bare walls of her first home as a newlywed in Salem, Oregon, Kara enrolled in community college watercolor classes. That led to joining the Watercolor Society of Oregon and serving as its President, teaching painting classes and workshops, Signature Membership in the Northwest Watercolor Society, and hand pulled printmaking. In addition to Lunaria Gallery in Silverton, she is also represented at Portland Art Museum Rental Sales Gallery.

Kara’s work often spans the wide variety of emotions and gestures of dance. Early childhood memories growing up in Chula Vista, CA and performing “I’m a Little Teapot” for her grandmother, keeping a Hula-Hoop twirling, and practicing the latest dance steps in high school for the weekend gym dances bring fond memories and inspiration for her art. She graduated in 1972 from Lewis and Clark College with a major in Literature and Spanish and 1973 with Master in Art of Teaching. Her first formal dance training came as a high school Spanish teacher with Portland Public Schools and while organizing cultural activities she joined the Spanish Pueblo Dancers. She later danced for 25 years with Power and Praise Dance Company, a contemporary company with special interest in themes reflecting spirituality, theology, and liberation. Painting series from its repertoire include “Bringing the Light”, “The Lord’s Prayer” and “Mary’s Dance”.
