Dena Lynn

Up-Cycled Furniture

About the Artist

Dena Lynn is a self-taught folk artist, who has been transforming cast-off items into works of art, since she discovered she could paint, at the age of almost-40.  She has a gift of coordinating/clashing various colors and patterns, in a way that “breaks the rules” and yet delights the senses. She takes great pleasure in giving stuffy and serious furniture the “permission” to express its inner frivolity & frou-frouness, all the while retaining its inherent functional usefulness – a lamp still illuminates the room, even while it lights up the heart.

Serendipity means “an unexpected treasure.”   She views life as a scavenger hunt, and is always on the lookout for forlorn, no-longer-wanted pieces of furniture, and other accessories, that have eye-catching profiles.  As she scours the countryside, looking for unwanted and forlorn furniture to rescue, repair and resurrect/upcycle, she often comes upon an unexpected treasure hiding in a yard sale, a flea market, a thrift store, or even a dumpster.  She brings home these discarded diamonds in the rough, seeing past the rough exterior, into the hidden potential. After cleaning, repairing, and priming each piece (creating a blank canvas), she unleashes the inner joy and beauty of each item – often allowing it to “tell” her how it would love to look.  (For the record, she views human beings the same way – it is her life-mission to inspire everyone she encounters to see and be who they truly are.)

It is her desire that each piece be “adopted” by someone who falls in love with it, and that it will continue to inspire delight and joy, as it catches the eye and induces a smile – transforming the mundane moment-at-hand into an unexpected treasure.

She confesses to a covert plan:  to infect the world – invading every home on the planet with one of her creations, lightening each heart, and bringing about a contagious harmony! She’s out to transform the planet – one piece of furnARTure at a time.

In addition to her furnARTure, Dena Lynn also owns “Serendipites by Dena:  Art Classes & More!”  Similar to the “sip and paint” classes, but more fun and intimate (she keeps attendance under 30, to maximize connection and attention).  These classes are held throughout the Willamette Valley, in public venues, and in private homes/businesses (everything from birthday parties to fund-raisers).  She’s enthusiastic about creating a safe, playful and inspirational environment, in which humans of all ages, and all (or no) experience levels, can unleash their own inner-artist.  Check out her website for more information:  http://serendipitiesbydena.com/
